The new 1100 basic is more off road oriented with low screen, slimmer, less wind protection etc. I believe the 2016-19 models are the best compromise as a real allrounder. Better for touring then the new 1100 base model and better for off road then the new 1100 electronic gizmo loaded AS.

CRF1100L is a Honda dirtbike with lights. CRF means (C)ourse (R)acer (F)ourstroke traditionally. The CR500 as example is a 500cc twostroke engine. This is no longer accurate, XRL would probably be a better name; in lineage that would make the Africa Twin a brother to the XR650L trail bikes.
Similar with the 950-990, but this time the 890 has more low down torque and more torque everywhere. Obviously the dyno numbers can be difficult to compare but they do help to give you a rough idea. A new 750 or 800cc or similar AT could be a good adventure touring option. The litre plus bike is just too big and heavy.
Well, as an owner of KTM 1190 R 2013, KTM 890 2023 non R (still getting used to it, only 190km on ODO now) and ex-owner of Honda ATAS 2020 (switched to KTM 890 actually), I would say that comparison of 2020+ ATAS with any year 890 (S/R) is a bit off because these models designed for a bit different purposes.
